Maritime units reference
Shipping uses a mix of metric, imperial and nautical units that varies by trade, cargo type and geography. The key fixed factors used in this converter are:
- 1 metric tonne (MT) = 0.9842 long tons (LT) = 1.1023 short tons (ST) = 1,000 kg
- 1 nautical mile (nm) = 1.852 km = 1.1508 statute miles
- 1 knot = 1.852 km/h (nautical miles per hour)
- 1 cubic metre (m3) = 35.315 cubic feet (ft3)
- 1 barrel (bbl) = 158.99 litres
Long tons remain standard in many dry-bulk charter parties and P&I contexts. Short tons are common in North American grain trades. Barrels and cubic metres are both used in tanker and bunker contexts depending on the counterparty. Temperature conversions use the standard Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin affine relationships.
