How bunker cost is calculated
Bunker cost is split between the sea passage and time in port, because consumption rates differ significantly. Vessels typically burn four to eight times more fuel at sea than at anchor or alongside:
- Sea bunker cost = sea days x sea consumption (MT/day) x bunker price (USD/MT)
- Port bunker cost = port days x port consumption (MT/day) x bunker price (USD/MT)
- Total bunker cost = sea bunker cost + port bunker cost
For voyage cost and TCE calculations, the total bunker cost is usually expressed as a daily figure (total / voyage days). Port consumption covers auxiliary engines, heating coils and cargo gear; it varies widely by vessel type and cargo.
